“You must be the change you want to see in the world” ~Ghandi
Ever since I stepped foot on campus, this quote has constantly circled my thoughts. College can be a huge change in direction for anyone. This is the time when you start making decisions that readily impact your future and how people perceive you. With all of this in mind, I have made it a goal of mine to cherish these few years while also making a noticeable impact on the school and my community, and I believe that you should do the same.
During my freshman year, I was pretty shy and never really wanted to step outside of my comfort zone. Midway through, I decided that mindset had to change in order for me to grow as an individual. I started taking on leadership positions and, on a whim, traveled to Mexico with people I’d never met! As the years passed by, I started to become more involved with school and the community. I did research, took on more leadership roles, volunteered, joined the Zachry Leadership Program and put myself out there the best way I knew how. Was I nervous and did I ever doubt my abilities? Yes, but I couldn’t let that mentality stop me from pursuing what I thought was impossible.
Now, with the experience and connections I’ve made over the years and as I finish up my last semester in college, I strive to use my platform to motivate and inspire others to do the same. When you graduate, people aren’t going to remember you for being completely dedicated to school; they’re going to remember how you made them feel. Doing well in school is important, but the connections, friendships and legacy that you create is what will set you apart from others in the future.
With all of this being said, take risks, be bold, step outside of your comfort zone and take any opportunity that is presented to you. Take that research class, do Aggies Invent, start an organization or make a huge impact on your community. If something seems daunting right now, that just means it’s an area for potential growth.
Make your presence known and always strive to leave somewhere better than how you found it. If you’ve been looking for a sign to make a difference at school or in your community… this is it.
