Throughout high school, I constantly changed my mind on the major I wanted to pursue. I went from wanting to be a pharmacist, to a biomedical engineer, to an environmental engineer, and then a psychiatrist, but one thing led to another and I decided that electrical engineering was the right choice for me. Electrical engineering was a major I thought would challenge me beyond my comfort zone. Also, the job opportunities in electrical engineering are endless, which provides flexibility in my career path.
The concepts and theories in electrical engineering can be extremely imaginary, so a lot of the material requires you to be able to think outside the box. My critical thinking skills have drastically changed since I’ve started college and I owe a lot of it to my major.
This major has pushed me beyond limits farther than I ever thought possible. I’ve had my fair share of long nights, but looking back and realizing that I learned so much during those times of anguish is truly gratifying.
Electrical engineers span a wide range of job sectors because every company needs an electrical engineer. With an electrical engineering degree, you can work in energy, aerospace, oil and gas, technology and chemical industries, just to name a few. Over the past three years, I’ve worked in three different sectors and I’ve loved every second of it.
Being able to apply what I’ve learned in different classes to different sectors has not only taught me to think outside the box, but has also shown me that my possibilities are limitless.
When I set my mind to something, I always accomplish it. Yes, I have had my ups and downs in my major but they have all been worth it. When I look back to my freshman year to see how far I’ve come, all I can do is smile. From the academic development and the job opportunities I have been given, electrical engineering has set me on the right path to success. If I could go back, I wouldn’t change anything. I love my major even with the numerous obstacles it has put me through and I can’t wait to see where it takes me.
